MARKET OUTLOOK
A new report out by Juniper Research has found that by 2017, annual revenues from only mobile entertainment services will reach almost $75 billion. This substantial growth is primarily driven by the emergence of more sophisticated monetization strategies, allied to a nascent ecosystem of app-centric mobile devices, such as smart watches.
In 2014, mobile ad content is on pace to rise another 75.1% to $31.45 billion, accounting for nearly one-quarter of total digital ad spending worldwide.
The Wireless Tower Construction industry contracted over the past five years because of the recession. Industry revenue fell as business infrastructure investments stagnated and downstream industries relied on already existing technology to cut costs. Nevertheless, industry revenue is expected to increase as a result of increases in private nonresidential construction and government investment, as well as the steady expansion of high-speed data services and older infrastructure requiring maintenance and upgrades.
The global addressable market for cell tower lease revenue is over $81.5 billion per year. The challenge is that most of this opportunity is not capitalized since mobile operators in most countries own and manage their own cell towers. Some partake in cell site sharing to reduce costs, but the model of third-party management is not widely implemented. The U.S. and Indian markets are the two markets where this opportunity hasn’t gone un-noticed and third-party companies manage operator’s passive infrastructure. In the U.S., cell tower operators like American Tower Corp. and Crown Castle International Corp. managed and/or operated approximately 30% of the over 260,000 cell sites in operation in the United States in 2009. The remaining sites are operator owned and managed or managed by property owners.
In other regions, governments are pushing infrastructure sharing as a means to increase rural build-outs by reducing the overall costs. The global forecast for cell towers through 2020 looks very promising.
