The major U.S. index futures are pointing to a lower opening on Monday,
with sentiment reflecting risk aversion amid fears concerning a Fed rate hike. The dollar is firmer in reaction to the expectation, while commodities are lower. Oil is retreating from a 7-week high. Global cues aren't enterprising, with European stocks also wallowing in negative territory.
lthough M&
news could create some flutter in the markets, the lack of any major economic catalyst and the overbought levels of the markets along with rate fears could exert downward pressure on the markets. U.S. stocks finished the week ended
ugust 19th mixed amid reaction to fears of a rate hike triggered by some Fed comments, oil's rally and the FOMC minutes.
Last Monday, the major averages rose modestly, propped up by oil's climb, M&
news and stimulus hopes. Weighed down by fears of an interest rate hike in the aftermath of the release of some strong domestic data, the averages retreated on Tuesday.
The Fed minutes catalyzed an upward move by the markets on Wednesday, although the gains were only modest. The averages overcame rate jitters and ended Thursday's session modestly higher, as positive earnings and higher oil prices lent support. Rate hike fears once again came to the forefront on Friday, re-ignited by some Fed speeches, sending stocks lower.
For the week ended
ugust 19th, the Dow Industrials fell 23.90 points or 0.13 percent to 18,553 and the S&P 500 Index closed 0.18 points or 0.01 percent lower to 2,184, while the Nasdaq Composite added 5.49 points or 0.11 percent to 5,238.
mong the sectors, the Philadelphia Oil Service Index and the NYSE
rca Computer Hardware Index rose over 3 percent each for the week. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index also added 2.21 percent. On the other hand, the NYSE
rca Gold Bugs Index fell 3.61 percent.
