Gold Prices Surge – Mining Companies Enjoying Bullish Movement
Gold’s advance this year has driven a surge in mining shares, and some investors are betting the shine won’t fade anytime soon.
Investors say a range of factors are prompting them to bet on further gains in the miners, from changes in the way the companies operate to continued demand for haven assets.
Gold futures have advanced 16% so far in 2016. The Market Vectors Gold Miners Exchange-Traded Fund, or GDX, has advanced 39% so far this year. U.S.-listed shares of Barrick Gold have surged 89% and Newmont Mining shares have gained 46%, making Newmont one of the best performers in the S&P 500.The S&P 500, meanwhile, has slipped 1.8% in the same period.
Concerns about uneven growth and low interest rates, including negative rates in Japan and parts of Europe, are likely to keep up demand for gold, some investors say. And others point out that the prices of gold and miners’ shares remain well below their records from 2011, suggesting that they’re not yet overextended. GDX is 71% below its record from 2011.
