The fields of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) have been getting a lot of attention lately and rightfully so. As several companies have entered the market over the last 3 years with both Hardware and Software offerings; the dreams of finally realizing the concepts romanticized throughout out the 90′s in Hollywood films such as “The Lawmower Man”, “Virtuosity” and “Jonny Mnemonic” are starting to come true.
DALT has had a deep interest in Virtual Reality for gaming applications specifically; dating all the way back to the mediums origins in the early 1990s. Primitive HMD (Head Mounted Displays) put together for the exclusive purpose of wanting to play X-Wing Vs. Tie Fighter (Lucas Arts) in Virtual Reality were among some of DALT's first experiments. At the time, as many companies figured out, the experience was incredibly limited largely due to restrictions of computer processing power and graphics capabilities. Today, these limitations are practically non-existent and what used to cost 10,000 Dollars or more for HMD solutions that couldn’t track the head movements of the user fluidly, now retail for under 1000 Dollars and are becoming more and more common.
This massive leap forward in capability combined with easy access from a pricing perspective for use by a broader consumer audience introduces some very unique opportunities. This is why DALT's interest in VR never faded and have expanded its research and development into Augmented Reality as well.
These mediums are useful tools for DALT's and bring forward new ways of creating and enjoying content. This excites us greatly. As you can imagine, much like DALT's other technologies which start out as in-house tools, the solutions will come to light as products.

Motion Capture
When it comes to performance or motion-capture, DALT takes things seriously.
Robin Conover is DALT's motion-capture expert and brings years of experience working with very high profile clients over the last two decades with him to Dalton Industries Inc., allowing them to service their clients with top-end motion-capture services.
Working as DALT's Digital Animation Supervisor and Motion-Capture Director, he brings his experience and knowledge to its own in-house productions as well. This provides DALT with the ability to produce character animation as fast as they can shoot the motions themselves. This is made possible by using the Xsensmotion-capture technology. The Xsens MVN is a full-body, camera-less inertial motion capture solution. This means DALT can shoot anywhere be it indoors or outdoors (on-set). Xsens MVN gives clean and smooth data to the point of requiring very little post clean up if any in some cases. The entire system is incredibly portable and a single suit with accessories packs into a reasonable suit-case style package.
It’s also fast getting set up and ready to do a take. Generally it takes less than 15 minutes to from opening the case and handing it to a performer to put it on to the point where DALT is ready to shoot.
Calibration takes seconds and the system remembers performers making it easier to swap actors out at any time.
